Postharvest life of cut gladiolus spikes.

An experiment was conducted in Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh, India during the winter season of 1999 on the spikes of Gladiolus cv. Friendship, which were harvested when basal florets started showing colour. Basal portions (2 cm) of spikes were re-cut and kept in glass jars containing vase solutions i.e. ethyl alcohol [ethanol] (10, 1, 0.1%), NaCl (0.1, 0.01 and 0.005%), sucrose (8, 4, 2%), boric acid (0.1, 0.01 and 0.001%), citric acid (0.03, 0.02, 0.01%) and Al2SO4 (0.1, 0.05, 0.02%). The spikes kept in distilled water served as control. Colour intensity was lighter in almost all the treatments. Aluminium sulfate, ethyl alcohol and citric acid induced earlier floret opening while 4% sucrose delayed it. Diameter of first floret was not affected by any of the treatments. Internodal lengths between the first and second floret and between the eighth and ninth florets were non-significant in any of the chemical treatments. Boric acid significantly increased the number of florets opening together while it was lower in Al2SO4, citric acid and ethyl alcohol. The number of florets remaining open at a time was highest under 8% sucrose. The time taken for the last floret to open was 14 days under 0.1% NaCl which was maximum while lowest in Al2SO4.
