Shelf life of peaches treated with 1-methylcyclopropene.

The effect of 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP; 0.14% EthylBloc) on the shelf life of peaches (Prunus persica cv. Aurora 1) stored at room temperature was investigated. Fruits were exposed to 1-MCP at 0, 100, 300 and 900 nl/litre for 12 h before storage at room temperature (25 deg C), and were evaluated every 2 days for 6 days. Mature green fruits treated with 1-MCP were firmer and greener than control fruits 4 and 6 days after treatment. 1-MCP also reduced the percentage of mature green fruits affected by rot (Monilinia sp.), but showed no effect on ripe fruits. 1-MCP at 100 nl/litre was adequate for slowing down rot development in mature green fruits. 1-MCP effectively increased the shelf life of peaches stored at room temperature.
