An experiment with half- and full-ripe fruits of banana was conducted. For AGNO3 treatment, the fruits were dipped in solutions of varying concentrations, i.e. 50 and 100 ppm, for 5 minutes. Treated fruits were wrapped in KMnO4 (0.5 and 1.0%) soaked sheets and kept in corrugated paper boxes for storage. In the control, the fruits were dipped in distilled water. Half-ripe banana fruits treated with 100 ppm AgNO3 and packed in corrugated paper boxes having 1.0% KMnO4 impregnated blotting paper sheets proved most effective in reducing rot and maintained the physical appearance and quality of fruits in fresh condition for 8 days without appreciable effect on the physicochemical characteristics under ambient temperature.
