Fruit Quality and Postharvest Losses of Rambutans in Retail Markets
Rambutan is a perishable tropical fruit and information of postharvest losses of rambutans in retail markets is not available. Therefore, the study was undertaken to survey fruit quality and postharvest losses of ‘Rongrein’ rambutans in retail markets during early season (May) and mid-season (June) in 1990 and 1991. The result showed that rambutans harvested during early season were less reddish development with smaller size, less total soluble solids and higher titratable acidity than those harvested during mid-season. Postharvest losses of rambutans harvested during early season were 0.65% disease, 3.95% insect and 41.08% physical damage, while postharvest losses of rambutans harvested during mid-season were 2.89% disease, 7.46% insect and 45.51% physical damage. Stem-end rot and fruit rot were found to be decay-causing disease of rambutans and mealy bug was the only insect found on fruit surface of rambutans. Bruising, breakage, black scar and browning of spinterns were the causes of physical damage of rambutans and browning was the major contribution of physical damage in both early season and mid-season.
