Postharvest benefits of integrated pest and disease managemant
The concept of integrated pest management (IPM) emerged in the 1960s, with a realisation that continuous reliance on pesticides, particularly as scheduled or calendar applications, was unsustainable. Of particular concern were impacts on human health, the environment, and pesticide efficacy associated with development of resistance by pests. IPDM is a strategy that encourages the reduction of pesticide use, by integrating a variety of options against pests and diseases their subsequent damage. IPDM employed both pre- and post-harvest can provide a range of benefits related to food safety (particularly pesticide residues), reduced incidence of pests and diseases on harvested produce, reduced damage postharvest, and reduced incidence of other postharvest disorders.
