Effects of sodium benzoate on vase life of Dendrobium ‘Walter Oumae’ 4N
Effects of different concentrations of sodium benzoate at 0, 50, 100, 200 and 400 mg/L combined with 10% sucrose + 150 mg/L 8-Hydroxyquinoline sulfate (8-HQS) on cut flowers of Dendrobium ‘Walter Oumae’4n were studied in relation to their vase life. The results showed that the orchid flowers held in solution containing 10% sucrose + 150 mg/L 8-HQS combined with 400 mg/L sodium benzoate showed the longest vase life of 12.9 days with 64.97% blossom followed by 200, 100, 50 and 0 mg/L. Moreover, this solution could delay decreasing of fresh weight, water uptake and reduce the increasing of respiration rate and ethylene production rate.
