Effect of polymeric films and packing methods on storage life of mangosteen fruit (Garcinia mangostana L.) The use of 40 um-thick polyethylene (PE) and 42 um-thick polyvinyl chloride (PVC) films to extend the storage life of mangosteen fruits at 13°C was studied. Two packing methods were tried; individual fruit wrapping and group wrapping using small plastic chambers each with 4 fruits. PE was more effective than PVC films and group wrapping than individual fruit wrapping in inhibiting respiration, ethylene production, and losses in weight, peel lightness, calyx chlorophyll, and fruit firmness. Consequently, fruits group-wrapped with PE stored the longest, about 24 days while with PVC, 20 days. Fruits individually wrapped with PE or PVC lasted for 20 and 16 days, respectively. Soluble solids and titratable acidity were not adversely affected.
