Effects of CO2 fumigation and packaging film on insect infestation and quality of paddy seeds cv. ‘Khao Dok Mali 105’
Paddy seeds cv. ‘Khao Dok Mali 105’ with 10% moisture content were fumigated with 100% CO2 for 5 days. The fumigated and non-fumigated seeds were then stored in 3 layers of paper with the inner layer coated with polyethylene (PE) film (multi-layer) or with 0.05 mm-thick PE film (single-layer) at 30-35°C with 65-80% RH for 6 months. Insect infestation was higher in the non-fumigated seed than in fumigated ones. The multi-layer tended to be a better package than the single-layer PE. The fumigated and non-fumigated seeds stored in both kinds of package gave high germination percentage (90-95%) and vigor (>80% germination after accelerated aging treatment) during the 6-month storage period. The seed moisture content was fairly stable and was between 10-11%. In a separate test, the fumigated seeds with CO2 were placed in glass containers with continuous flow of air. After 45 days, the usual life cycle period of the insect, no sign of insect activity was noted indication that CO2 fumigation resulted to total kill of the pest.
