Effects of 1-methylcyclopene on the vase life of Dendrobium cutflower
Cutflowers of Dendrobium Walter Oumae 4N were treated with 100 ppb 1-mehtylcyclopropene (1-MCP) for 0 (control), 2, 4, 8 or 12 h at 20°C and then held in distilled water in glass vessels at 25°C with 70-80% relative humidity. 1-MCP applied for 8 h appeared to be most effective in retarding flower color fading, weight loss and respiration rate and in improving water uptake, weight retention and flower opening. However, these effects were not sufficient to remarkably increase flower vase life. The cutflower lasted for 13.8 days which was statistically similar to that of untreated flowers of 12.6 days. Other 1-MCP treatments resulted to a vase life similar to or slightly longer than that of the control.
