Effect of some edible mushroom extracts on fruiting body formation of Volvariella volvacea
Young fruiting bodies of some edible mushrooms i.e. Pleurotus ostreatus, Lentinula edodes and Agrocybe cylindracea were homogenized separately with distilled water, methanol and acetone (500g/l). The aqueous extract was filtered through clean cheesecloth whereas the acetone and methanol extracts were concentrated by evaporation using rotary evaporator. The extracts were diluted to 1:10 with distilled water and added into potato dextrose agar (PDA) before sterilization. The plate agar medium was inoculated with mycelial plug of straw mushroom (Volvariella volvacea) obtained from the growing edge of 5-7 day old colony on PDA, and incubated at 30+2°C. During incubation, the growth of the colony on PDA was measured everyday for 7 days. The results revealed that the aqueous extract of P.ostreatus gave faster growth of the straw mushroom than that of the control group and those grown on the other extract incorporated media. Two fold serial dilutions of the aqueous extract from P.ostreatus were sprayed on the surface of moist cotton waste in plastic bags fully colonized with straw mushroom mycelia (12 day old). After 5 days of incubation at 30+2°C, it was found that the extract : water (1:1) significantly stimulated fruiting body formation.
