High CO2 treatment to control decay on peach fruits.
This study was conducted to investigate the effects of short term treatment(24-72 hours) with high CO2 concentrations (35, 60 or 100%) on growth of B. cinerea isolated from naturally infected peach fruit and decay of peach fruits at 25%.CO2 concentrations at 35-100% provided a reduction in growth of B. cinerea and, at 100%, significantly delayed the lesion formation during the treatment periods.Decay of peach fruits was controlled by use of high CO2 concentrations at 100% for 24 or 48 hours and 60% for 48 hours.Short term treatment of high CO2 concentrations 35-100% did not affect SSC, but increased firmness and colour preference. In certain case, off-flavors were noted in fruits after treatment with 100% CO2 for over than 24 hrs.CO2 concentration of 60%, therefore, was the most effective to control decay and preserve freshness of peach fruits.
